obtaining these measures. P otential computer system users or buyers usually employ a computer performance evaluation technique only if they believe its results provide valuable information. System Performance Evaluation Cooperative (SPEC) measures are perceived to provide such information and are therefore the ones most commonly used. SPEC measures are designed to evaluate the performance of engineering and scientific workstations, personal vector computers, and even minicomputers and superminicomputers. Along with the Transaction Processing Council (TPC) measures for database I/O performance, they have become de facto industry standards. However, do SPECS evaluation outcomes actually provide added information value? In this article, we examine these measures by considering their structure, advantages, and disadvantages. We use two criteria in our examination: Are the programs used in the SPEC suite properly blended to reflect a representative mix of different applications? And are they properly synthesized so that the aggregate measures correctly rank computers by performance? Our analysis has determined the following:

SPEC HPG benchmarks for high-performance systems

In this paper, we discuss results and characteristics of the benchmark suites maintained by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation’s (SPEC) High-Performance Group (HPG). Currently, SPEC HPG has two lines of benchmark suites for measuring performance of large-scale systems: SPEC OMP and SPEC HPC2002. SPEC OMP uses the OpenMP API and includes benchmark suites intended for measuring perfo...

SPEC HPC 2002 : The Next High - Performance Computer Benchmark Extended

The High-Performance Group of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC/HPG) [1] is developing a next release of its high-performance computer benchmark suite. The current suite, SPEChpc96 [2] is expected to be replaced by the SPEC HPC2002 suite in the second quarter of the year 2002. HPC2002 represents a minor update to SPEC’s current high-performance computing benchmarks. In the l...

Assessing the performance of a prediction error criterion model selection algorithm in the context of ARCH models

A number of ARCH models are considered in the framework of evaluating the performance of a method for model selection based on a standardized prediction error criterion (SPEC). According to this method, the ARCH model with the lowest sum of squared standardized forecasting errors is selected for predicting future volatility. A number of statistical criteria, that measure the distance between pr...
